Will Smith's Debut into the Gospel Music Industry

A lot of shifts are happening in this industry, leaving one question on all our lips - "what on earth is going on?"

Actor and artist Will Smith, known for his roots in R&B and hip hop, has achieved notable success with his debut Christian/gospel single. Titled "You Can Make It," co-written by Smith himself, the song made an impressive debut at No. 3 on two Billboard charts: Hot Gospel Songs and Gospel Digital Song Sales. Could this be the next Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award Winner?

Since its release on June 28, the faith-inspired single featuring Fridayy and Sunday Service, has garnered 665,000 official streams in the United States through July 4. It has also quickly gained traction on radio, entering the Gospel Airplay chart at No. 28.

During the BET Awards on June 30, Smith performed "You Can Make It" alongside Christian musicians Kirk Franklin, Chandler Moore, and the Sunday Service Choir. Following the performance, Smith expressed his sentiments on Instagram, stating, "I have returned Home! The comeback is always bigger than the setback."

Smith, 55, who had been relatively low-profile since the 2022 Oscars incident involving comedian Chris Rock, now sees this musical endeavor as a pivotal moment in his creative journey. He shared before the release of the single, "Through some of my darkest moments, music has always been there for me - to lift me and help me grow. It's my humble wish that it can do the same for you and bring you all the joy and light you deserve."

In an interview with Billboard, Smith discussed his motivation behind venturing into Christian music, revealing that the song's lyrics were deeply personal. He emphasized, "I was really talking to myself. To see so many people resonate with the intention gives me a clear North Star for this next chapter of my creative life."

While Smith has previously explored various belief systems, including Hinduism and Indian astrology, he has acknowledged the enduring influence of his Christian upbringing. Reflecting on his faith, he remarked in 2021, "You can't get where I get if you don't love the Lord."

"You Can Make It" delivers a message of hope amidst life's challenges, addressing themes of resilience and faith:

"From the flames that you walk through

But no one to talk to…

Tryna heal but the battle’s uphill

And if God is for real

You just wonder if he’ll listen

So many tests for the flesh

Exhausted, gasping to catch your breath

Walking through the valley of the shadow of death

And when you think you’ve got nothing left

Keep going."

Smith's venture into gospel music marks a significant shift from his well-known acting career and earlier music hits like "Gettin' Jiggy wit It" and "Just The Two Of Us." With "You Can Make It" making waves in the gospel music scene, Smith hints at further exploring Christian themes in his upcoming musical endeavors. What do we think, hit or miss? Let's discuss in the comments down below.
