History - Maverick City Music become first Gospel/Christian act to perform at Grammys in 20 years
Updated: Apr 4, 2022
Maverick City Music are a collaboration uniting for the purpose to serve the Kingdom, with the same heart and mission. To be the light and reflect the heart of Jesus on this side of Heaven!
This news was met with congratulations fro their peers and industry giants even though In 2017, Chance the Rapper performed with Kirk Franklin for “How Great” — a cover of Chris Tomlin’s “How Great is our God”
But we are guessing this means this is the first time in 20 years that a full gospel performance by a gospel act. The last performance when Brian McKnight, Al Green, Hezekiah Walker and Cece Winans performed a Gospel medley at the 2002 Grammys.
"What we did not intend to happen, happened in a major way. We became this thing called Maverick City Music. What was just writing sessions turned into a thing that now the world is getting a chance to hear, and we're on a ride that we didn't prepare for, a ride that we didn't really set out to be on, but we're having so much fun and now two years later we're doing a tour which is insane," artist Chandler Moore
Previously announced GRAMMY performers include J Balvin with Maria Becerra, Jon Batiste, Brothers Osborne, BTS, Brandi Carlile, Billie Eilish, Cynthia Erivo, H.E.R., Lady Gaga, John Legend, Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow, Maverick City Music, Nas, Aymée Nuviola, Leslie Odom, Jr., Ben Platt, Olivia Rodrigo, Silk Sonic, Chris Stapleton, Billy Strings, Carrie Underwood, and Rachel Zegler.
The group recently encouraged other believers to trust God with their vision, gifts, and talents. "Reminiscing on this moment, in this room, writing 'Jireh' not knowing the impact this song would have," the group wrote on Instagram. "It blows us away to see how much God has used this song to bless and minister to so many."
"We just want to encourage you to take what you have and trust God to finish what He has placed on your heart to start," they continued.
